Rebel, if you run a small agency and feel invisible next to the big players, here’s the good news: your size is the advantage, not the handicap. Ben Abbott, co-founder of White Tiger Digital, joins us to break down how independent agencies win: not with bigger budgets, but with sharper personality, clearer niches, and systems that actually bring in leads.

Personality Is Your Edge, Not Your Budget

Big agencies sell scale. You sell you. Ben’s blunt about it: your personality (your values, your opinions, the way you actually talk to clients) is what people buy from. Faceless giants can’t compete with that, so stop hiding it.

  • Write down 2 traits clients consistently praise you for (Ben’s are “systematic” and “opinionated”)
  • Let those traits show up in your outreach and calls, not just your logo
  • Drop the big-agency polish and lean into the human, tough-love version of you

Niche by Who You Are, Not Just Your Industry

Trying to appeal to everyone means appealing to no one. Ben’s twist: you don’t have to niche by industry alone: you can niche by personality, values, and the specific problem you solve. Match your outlook to the founders who share it.

  • Define your ideal client by mindset, not just sector e.g. “founders who want exponential growth, not just ticking over”
  • Use discovery calls to pre-qualify: ask about goals, obstacles, and ambition
  • Build a 30-second elevator pitch: what you do, who you help, what makes you different

Build a Simple Lead System (Ditch the Referral Rollercoaster)

Referrals are lovely, but they’re unpredictable. Ben’s fix is a “shitty first draft” outreach system (low-barrier, proactive, and repeatable) so leads don’t depend on luck.

  • Profile your ideal customer: characteristics, challenges, ambitions
  • On LinkedIn, don’t just comment: send a direct message with clarity on who you are
  • Ask two qualifying questions every time: “What do you want your business to look like?” and “What’s stopping you getting there?”

You don’t need to shout louder than the big brands. You need to be unmistakably you, and make it easy for the right clients to say yes.
