Give Before You Get

Think about reaching out to new people with genuine curiosity, not just for personal gain. The best opportunities often come from simply showing interest or sharing resources, rather than expecting anything in return.

Ask questions, listen, and look for ways to help others, sometimes, that’s all it takes to spark doors opening in return.

Make Networking Manageable

You don’t need a strict system to keep up with your network, but a little bit of organization can help you stay connected with the people who matter most.

You don’t need a rigid system to foster authentic connections. Some people are natural relationship-builders; others need a few “gentle guardrails” to keep track. Fab suggests tagging or categorising contacts to help maintain regular, genuine touchpoint: think newsletters, periodic check-ins, or curated social feeds.

Whether you prefer mental lists or digital tools, the goal is the same: intentional, meaningful engagement. Some simple ways to manage your network:

  • Save or bookmark the profiles of people who inspire you.
  • Create basic lists (on paper, a spreadsheet, or a simple CRM) for different groups, like clients, peers, or collaborators.
  • Interact regularly—comment on their posts, send a quick “congrats!” message, or share something valuable.

Stay Consistently in Touch

Maintaining a connection doesn’t require constant communication. Instead, small, thoughtful actions go a long way:

  • Send a group email or newsletter with updates.
  • Do quarterly check-ins with key contacts—just to say hello or see how they’re doing.
  • Attend events where your connections will be present, and use these opportunities to catch up in person.

Build Inclusion into Your Actions

Inclusivity often begins with asking questions and admitting what you don’t know. Both speakers agreed: it’s okay not to have all the answers. Start by considering two pillars: representation and accessibility. What communities are missing? Are your communications and events truly welcoming and accessible? Look for feedback through individual conversations or market research and be open to changing your approach.

Fostering inclusion is about more than just good intentions. Start by taking a close look at who’s currently in your network and who might be missing.

Key points to consider:

  • Review your materials and messages for accessibility (captions, alt text, clear language).
  • Make invitations specific and welcoming to underrepresented groups.
  • Directly ask people what would help them feel more included or supported.

Be Ready to Learn

You won’t get everything right at first, and that’s okay. Approach every relationship with humility and a willingness to learn. Respect differences in preferences and language, and don’t be afraid to ask for feedback, even if it feels a little uncomfortable.
