“My mission in life is to help creative humans like me living with Chronic Illnesses.” – Mauikai Gold
What inspired you to start your brand?
It took me a while to figure out my current state (brain fog & confusion) after my diagnosis of Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis in 2010. The answer appeared deep into my conscious state, before doing my best to decipher what my subconscious was up to for countless months.
The end result was under my nose all along: my M.S. is my SUPERPOWER!
What’s your competitive advantage?
IMHO, what makes me unique is that I refused all suggestions of Western Medications and treatments for it until this year.
Undergoing monthly infusions at the hospital for two hours once a month; a treatment a neurologist wouldn’t recommend due to its sky-high prices per treatment & also, potential risk of fatality.
What skills did you come to the brand with already and how has this helped grow your business?
Pre-pandemic, I was a full-time professional singer, songwriter & performing artist. The two outfits I co-created with my husband were my every day, 100%.
That meant managing ourselves, shooting our cover art for the singles and also, storyboarding our own music videos. My digital marketing experience commenced in the MySpace days. Back then I had begun learning more about things like what the “new social media outlets” started popping out of nowhere.
Later on, I sharpened my skills, thoughts and continued learning about how to set up promotional campaigns while he focused more on the best ways to run ads on Facebook.
What skills did you improve or add to your toolkit by starting your brand?
The way my mental health was degrading, I could’ve behaved the same way I was dealing with my illness, but I knew better this time and learned to love myself more by not judging myself when I wasn’t doing what I had already said I would do.
I began napping, journaling and resting more often.
I love how open everyone is in the Creative Impact community. There’s zero competition, it’s more collaborative and networking, too!
What’s the most rewarding part of running your own brand?
Being my own boss is the best thing about creating digital assets, writing books, and including my curiosity every day!
If you only have 5 minutes for some self-care…
Laughter is one of my favourite “guilty pleasures”. Comedian & Family Feud host, Steve Harvey makes me belly laugh…exactly what I know I can find in 5 minutes.
What one failure or challenge are you glad you experienced, and what have you learned from it?
The health issues are a challenge that was hard to accept. Now, I know that my illness is my superpower!
When I started, I wish I’d known that success is defined by me. Before, I had all the reasons why certain goals weren’t “realistic”.
Now I know that there will always be either reasons or results. I’m grateful that I chose to use them later.
