Dawn Morton-Young on increasing diversity in the corporate workplace

Alt Marketing Team

Meet our Alt Marketing Certification graduate Dawn Morton-Young. Her energy, drive and passion have been a true gift to our Winter 2022 cohort. Even more so, she continues to deliver that same energy to our alumni community. Today, we asked Dawn to share more about her journey and mission.

“I am a Diversity Equity Inclusion and Belonging Strategist, An Executive Coach to Underrepresented Leaders, A Speaker and Trainer. My mission is to increase the diversity at board and C-suite level, and to make a tangible difference to minority groups within the workplace by supporting them to uplevel their mindset and skillsets”.

Dawn has worked in the people space for over 13 years, beginning her career in DEI as a Senior Equalities Officer for a prominent local authority and continuing her work as a Diversity and HR consultant.

Giving a unique industry edge

Dawn’s passion for equity in the workplace led her to concentrate her NLP-based coaching practice on those who are underrepresented in the workplace, whether through gender or race, or disability.

Being an underrepresented leader in the corporate space for many years, I realised that particular niche challenges are not currently addressed by other coaches or initiatives.

Her unique coaching service is the only one to combine mindset coaching methods and professional skills development to ensure her clients develop their mental resilience, motivation and belief in their abilities.

“I coach from an understanding of the immense pressure and psychological barriers faced by those traditionally underrepresented in society. In other words, I coach from a position of understanding ethnicity, gender, disability and other barriers. I am the only NLP qualified executive coach with this ability,” she points out.

The power of investing in yourself

Dawn has invested time in developing her skills, just like she did throughout our certification, to widen her personal toolkit. In fact, she sees her NLP training as a significant addition to her skillset.

I wanted to better understand how to ‘read’ clients and help them shift in their lives quicker, so I qualified as a Neuro-linguistic programming coach – this has literally made a magical impact on my practice

From singing to a career in HR, Dawn’s experience is far and wide. For instance, Dawn tops off her portfolio career as a backing vocalist and session singer, having worked with artists such as Emeli Sande, Ellie Goulding, and Madonna.

“I spent several years as a senior HR professional. In fact, the mentoring that I do is with the experience of hiring to board level roles. Such as, knowing how people operate at that level, or ‘back door’ ways to quickly elevate to a place for senior roles in their industry.”

The Dawn Morton-Young personal toolkit

What’s an underrated tool indispensable for your business?

Mmm, that’s a difficult one as I am a self-confessed technophobe! I think for me, it has to be hiring a VA. Can I call a VA a tool? She literally is the opposite of me when it comes to tech, and this has saved me time and money.

What have you learned about yourself and your brand since taking the Alt Marketing School course?

I knew hardly anything about marketing – but also that if I put my mind to it, I could do things that were unfamiliar to me.

How did the Alt Marketing School course support you in making marketing systems better and more effective?

The course let me know what was out there. For example, best practices, a roadmap for how to start organically putting my work out there and grow a relationship with my audience. Also, some really cool tools.

Self-care is a big part of being able to show up for others. You only have 5 minutes to yourself. What do you do?

What one failure or challenge are you glad you experienced, and what have you learned from it?

It has to be not getting payment from clients. I am glad I experienced this, as I now have to better set up my payment systems.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who is thinking about starting their own brand?

You should do certain things professionally, photoshoots, brand kit etc.

If you could describe Alt Marketing School in one word, what would it be?

Ready to marketing with impact, purpose and intention?

According to Dawn Morton-Young: “the (Alt Marketing) certification provided me with a deeper understanding of marketing methods, with niche tactics to help my business stand out, lots of tools and things like automation to help someone like me with very little previous marketing knowledge or experience.”
