Taking the beauty industry by storm with BAO skincare

Alt Marketing Team

Beth Coldrick is the founder of BAO Skincare, which she created for sensitive skin, so each product helps to soothe, nourish and calm skin. Having founded the brand herself, we speak to Beth about the lessons she has learned about being a founder, working in the organic skincare industry and what advice she has to offer to fellow entrepreneurs.

Start a business in something you actually care about, love and feel passionate about.

Hi, my name is Beth…

I’m the founder of BAO Making Skin Happy. BAO stands for Beth’s Aromatherapy Organic. I launched BAO in 2018 after being in the natural beauty industry for over 15-years while suffering from sensitive skin brought on through years of taking awful medications for my Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

There are seven face products and seven body products in the collection. All are certified organic and natural by cosmos soil association and registered vegan and cruelty-free by the Vegan Society.

I originally started in the beauty industry because I have loved natural skincare since I was young. After being a facialist for over ten years, I decided I wanted to become a skincare formulator. Then I could also create products to help heal my own sensitive skin.

My role as a formulator

Through becoming a formulator, I found it much easier and more natural to create my own products rather than getting them made in a factory by someone else. Also, becoming certified as a formulator built more trust with my customers.

Having funded and founded my brand all by myself (because I can’t secure any elsewhere) encourages me to be more careful with how and what I spend money on. It’s allowed the business to grow naturally rather than being forced.

Lessons from starting out

One of the best things you can do is to start a brand that reflects your passions. It’ll make the work a lot more fun, and you’ll be more invested in it. But be prepared to work 100 hour weeks to start with. In fact, it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get a business off the ground.

Don’t compare yourself to others; always follow your own path. There’s no right or wrong way to do things, and you’ll learn as you go. The most important thing is to stay focused and to keep moving forward.

Keeping it simple

There is this misconception that you need to have loads of products and skincare steps to make your skin better. I believe in keeping it simple, and less is more. BAO is all about providing customers with good quality, effective skincare that works rather than selling them loads of products they don’t actually need.

Social media has been an incredibly positive influence on my skincare brand. It has allowed me to connect with so many incredible people and stockists.

Don’t get overwhelmed by the odds stacked against you and give up too easily. Don’t lose your motivation if things don’t go as planned. Business, like life, is not without its own challenges. Aim to always be learning something new about your business.

What lies in store for 2022?

2022 is going to be an exciting year. I am excited to be formulating and launching new products, including a baby and mum-to-be collection. We are always adapting and learning.

In fact, the most effective businesses are always adapting and improving. Last but most importantly, don’t forget to make time for fun – it keeps everything in perspective and restores your enthusiasm for your brand.
